Overview
Research & Strategy
Expo Pavilion represents a major step in redefining how audiences experience digital art in public space. Working with Sunderland City Council and the Pavilion’s curatorial team, BLUP explored how motion and light could activate architecture, creating a visual dialogue between the city’s regeneration and its creative community. The brief called for an opening programme that would inspire curiosity, celebrate innovation, and invite global collaboration.
Innovation
What the client needed
- Using the Pavilion’s 20m x 5m semi-transparent LED façade, BLUP created a series of ambient motion pieces that merge culture, data, and technology. Each layer of motion responds to the site’s architecture—allowing natural light to interact with the visuals, and creating a dynamic sense of transparency and depth. The installation celebrates new possibilities in storytelling, blending visual identity, 3D motion, and experimental design.
Impact
From rough takes to refined vision
- The Pavilion’s launch marks one of the UK’s largest outdoor digital art screens, an open platform for artists, studios, and organisations including Ouchhh, Krista Kim, W1 Curates, NASA, and Warner Music. Running daily for twelve months, the programme establishes Sunderland as a hub for digital culture and creative technology, connecting local audiences to international art movements.
